Nicotinamide Adenine Dinucleotide, or NAD+, is an essential coenzyme that carries electrons in cellular bioenergetics and is involved in oxidation-reduction (redox) reactions. It is essential to the citric acid cycle, oxidative phosphorylation, glycolysis, and other metabolic processes. Because this pyridine nucleotide may exist in both reduced (NADH) and oxidized (NAD⁺) states, it can be used in cofactor-dependent biological processes including enzymatic catalysis.
